THEME: THE WORST KIND OF LIE!
TEXT: [NLT] JAMES 3:14
"But if you are bitterly jealous and there is selfish ambition in your hearts, don't brag about being wise. That is the worst kind of lie."
There are different kinds of lies, but there is one that Scripture describes as particularly dangerous: the lie we tell about ourselves while our hearts contradict what our mouths profess. James addresses people who may claim to possess wisdom while their lives are being controlled by bitter jealousy and selfish ambition. In other words, it is possible to sound wise, look wise, speak wisely, and even be regarded as wise by people, while carrying attitudes in the heart that completely contradict true godly wisdom. This is why James says, “Don't brag about being wise. That is the worst kind of lie.” The greatest deception is not merely deceiving another person; it is deceiving yourself about your spiritual condition. When a person refuses to acknowledge what is wrong within, they lose the opportunity to allow God to correct and transform them.
True wisdom is not demonstrated merely by what you know. It is demonstrated by the condition of your heart and the character of your life. Jealousy can make another person's success look like your failure. Selfish ambition can make you pursue your own advancement without considering who gets hurt along the way. When these things occupy the heart, pretending to be spiritually mature does not make the condition better.
God is not only interested in what we say; He examines the heart. You may successfully convince people that everything is fine, but you cannot deceive God. Therefore, instead of protecting an image of perfection, we should have the humility to say, “Lord, search me. Show me what needs to change in me.”
Do not allow jealousy to become your hidden identity. Do not allow competition to replace contentment. Do not allow selfish ambition to become the motivation behind everything you do. And above all, do not call something godly simply because it produces a result you desire. The good news is that God does not expose the condition of our hearts to condemn us; He exposes it so that He can transform us. When you surrender your heart to Him, He can remove bitterness, purify your motives, teach you contentment, and help you celebrate the victories of others without feeling threatened by them. Remember: Someone else's rising does not mean you are falling. Someone else's blessing does not cancel yours. Someone else's success does not make you a failure. You do not need to compete with everyone around you. Your assignment is to faithfully walk in the purpose God has given you. Let your wisdom be genuine. Let your motives be pure. Let your words agree with your heart, and let your heart remain surrendered to God.
PRAYER POINTS:
Father, Search my heart and reveal everything in me that does not please You.
Father, Deliver me from bitter jealousy, selfish ambition, pride, unhealthy competition, and every hidden motive that is contrary to Your will.
Father, Give me genuine wisdom that produces godly character. Teach me to celebrate others without feeling threatened and to trust Your plan for my life.
